NOÉ SENDAS – Walking & Remembering 17 March – 5 May, 2018

The exhibition Walking & Remembering conceived for Hopstreet gallery, contains some fundamental characteristics of Noé Sendas’s work: besides the use of Antique Art, evident in many of his pieces, the presence of several modes of expression also stands out in a conceptual and spatial system that suggests relationships between materials collected from different proveniences. More than describing a journey or evoking memories, Sendas “purpose is to awaken memories which are not yours, which are older than you, to restore connexions and renew relationships which lie in the distant past”1, between the real experience and the dream, in a silence that simultaneously confronts the spectator with the strangeness of his perception and with the disquiet and discomfort of the artist himself. Ultimately, this sense of disquiet is the starting point for both, or perhaps all, journeys.

Noé Sendas was born in Brussels, 1972, lives and works in Berlin and Madrid.
Sendas began presenting his work in the late nineties. Explicit and implicit references to artists and literary, cinematic, or musical creations are part of his raw materials. Specific concerns about the reflection and practice of visual arts can also be added to his repertoire. These include: the body, as an entity that is simultaneously theoretical and material; the observer’s perception mechanisms; or the discursive potential of exhibition methods. His work is represented in many public and private collections in North and South America and Europe.
